LEAPS is very proud to announce that we are formally co-operating with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for the improvement of safety in the leisure industry. The IET has roots dating back to the 19th Century and today it is a global and diverse home for 156,000 engineering and technology professionals in 143 countries. The IET is at the cutting edge of innovation with its mantra being “we inspire, inform and influence the global engineering and technology community to engineer a better world”.

Glenn Atkins CMgr FCMI, Professional Registration Operations Manager at the IET, said: “We recognise the potential in aligning with LEAPS, given our shared emphasis on professionalism, and enhancing safety. Through this agreement, together we are championing excellence in the sector, and working to engineer a better world.”

From this collaboration we have agreed:

– To have dialogue and information exchanges on subjects and topics that are of mutual benefit to both parties, with a particular focus on improving safety and technical best practice in the leisure industry.
– To explore the opportunity to recognise and improve the competence, experience and professionalism of engineering technical personnel working in the leisure industry (“inspectors”) through the uptake of the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment (UK-SPEC) professional registration.
– To consider mapping the job roles of the inspectors against the competencies described in UK-SPEC.
– To explore opportunities to enhance the continuing professional development (CPD) of engineers and technicians working in the leisure industry.
– To explore international opportunities to improve safety and technical best practice in the leisure industry.
– To share, where relevant, the latest industry news and appropriate information on technological advances.
– To explore opportunities to jointly promote the importance of engineering and technology to the wider general public.

The IET has a vast amount of resources, knowledge and experience and this agreement allows LEAPS to access this to improve the opportunities for technicians, engineers and inspectors working within the leisure industry.

This creates an aligned pathway to become professionally registered, to work together to increase the quality of CPD being offered by LEAPS, to innovate, spread best practice and advance safety within the leisure industry as a whole. LEAPS are committed to making the industry better and this co-operation with the IET is a step further forward on that path.
